How does Mexico auto insurance work?
Canadian and U.S. auto insurance isn't valid in Mexico, so you'll need a policy from an authorized Mexican insurance company. If you're insured through Sun Coast with Mapfre, you're covered by a trusted and secure Mexican insurer. If you have an accident, call the toll-free number listed on your policy certificate. A bilingual adjuster will guide you through the process, may even you at the scene, and help get you back on the road.
What are the requirements for driving into Mexico?
To legally drive your Canadian or U.S. vehicle into Mexico, you’ll need more than just Mexico auto insurance. Here’s what to bring:

- Valid U.S. driver’s license
- Vehicle registration or title (to prove ownership)
- Lienholder or lease permission if your vehicle is financed or leased
- Valid Mexico auto insurance policy

If you plan to travel beyond the Mexico Free Zone (typically 25–30 km from the border), you’ll also need:

-FMM (Tourist Permit): Required for all travelers staying over 7 days or going beyond the border zone.
-TIP (Temporary Import Permit): Required for most U.S.-plated vehicles traveling outside the Free Zone. You can get this online or at the border.
What does Mexico Auto Insurance Cover?
Mexico insurance policies provide the proof of financial responsibility required under Mexican law. Depending on your coverage level, your policy may include:

- Liability coverage for third-party injury or property damage (required by law)
- Physical damage and theft protection for your vehicle
- Medical payments for you and your passengers
- Legal assistance and bail bond coverage

What is the financial responsibility law in Mexico?
If you're in an accident in Mexico, you must prove financial responsibility on the spot. That’s why liability insurance is mandatory. Coverage limits vary by Mexican state, and insufficient limits could lead to vehicle impoundment or jail time. This is why we recommend and most travelers opt for higher liability limits — especially travelers with significant assets.
What types of vehicles can be insured?
We offer policies for a wide range of vehicles, including:

We do not insure buses or commercial vehicles.
